For Martin's second Knit-a-Long (KAL) in Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted, he looked to the motifs, textures and colors of Northern Europe. Inspired by the current popularity in interior design, wallpaper and fashion design and influenced by knitted textures and fairisle patterns from the Shetland and Faeroe Isles, as well as Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland, he has created eight squares to combine into a beautiful finished afghan.
Once again this KAL has been designed with the beginner knitter in mind. In this blanket, the knitter will start to create more recognizable motifs in both one and two color squares, delicate motifs in simple textures, lace and with a further option that introduces the beginner knitter to a simple bead technique, patterns and different stitches.
Martin's instructions will link all these motif squares together and introduce a brand new 'colorwork' skill during this KAL. Three of the squares will be designed in two color work, using this new technique that eliminates the "fairisle-headache" of stranding and weaving the yarns into the wrong side of the work. This skill, Martin promises, will be revealed during the course of the KAL.
Throughout the KAL, Rowan will offer videos by Martin Storey that explain his design process, stitch techniques and finishing ideas.
Images of the finished KAL afghan will be available from Rowan prior to the release of the first clue.
Knitters will be able to acquaint themselves with the different squares and can look forward to more clarity about the finished project.
Martin has created four classic tonal palettes, chosen to fit in with the most popular interior color schemes – a very soft and natural palette; a calming blue palette; a fresh green palette and a zingy spice palette. All to fit the knitter’s mood and interior.
